Cost-Effective Engine Emissions Reduction
Our mission is to provide Climate Change Technology Solutions that keep pace with the changing regulatory environment.
RCT has developed the RCTClean 3.0gr Solution to enable 2-stroke lean-burn (2SLB) natural gas pipeline engines to meet the new EPA Good Neighbor Rule 3.0gr NOx limit while also reducing methane emissions well below the proposed new EPA 4.1% methane fuel slip accounting level. The RCTClean 3.0gr Solution reduces NOx emissions below the EPA Good Neighbor Rule 3.0gram limit while simultaneously reducing methane emissions by over 35%.
The Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA) has indicated a “…total capital cost of $3 Billion or more for RICE affected by the Proposed [Good Neighbor] Rule operated by INGAA members. Beyond the interstate pipelines, GPA Midstream (representing gas gathering and processing operators) estimates its members operate over 10,000 affected engines and the Texas Pipeline Association (representing intrastate pipelines) estimates over 3,000 affected engines. Both cite individual engine retrofit costs of $2MM to $5MM, which leads to cumulative costs well over $30 billion dollars. The RCTClean 3.0gr Solution can be installed for half the cost and in half the project time to complete as all currently available solutions.
The RCTClean 3gr Solution dramatically improves natural gas engine combustion stability, which reduces operating stresses on engine components. The reduced stresses extend the operating life of these components thereby increasing the time between upper and lower end overhauls by as much as two times. As a result, there is an improvement in engine availability and a significant reduction in operating and maintenance costs.
INGAA estimates that it takes between one and 2-1/2 years to design, manufacture, and install conventional emission reduction systems on two-cycle integral natural gas engine compressors. The RCTClean 3gr Solution can be installed and operational in just six months or less. This dramatically reduces the engine downtime and provides the opportunity to generate several months of incremental operating revenue.
The RCTClean 3gr Solution, together with its monitoring and control system, results in more stable, reliable, and safe engine operation and performance. Clearly, the RCTClean 3gr Solution can contribute to the reliability of the U.S. natural gas infrastructure, thereby strengthening national security.
Industry-sponsored validation and optimization testing was conducted in 2022 at CSU Energy Institute on a GMV-4 engine that shows performance of the unmodified engine and with the RCTClean 3.0gr Solution:
